Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition Statement in Solidarity with the People of Venezuela

Statement in Solidarity with the People of Venezuela

The Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition stands in solidarity with the people and government of Venezuela in light of the attacks on their democracy, orchestrated in large part by the government of the United States, since the presidential election held on July 28, 2024.

In light of these unrelenting attempts to overturn the legitimately elected government of Venezuela, we are reminded that:

·         Only the sovereign government of Venezuela can determine the winners of elections in Venezuela. Attempts by outside governments or groups to determine the outcome of a country’s election only serve to undermine its legitimate democratic institutions.

·         We congratulate the people of Venezuela for an election that was well-organized and implemented in an orderly and peaceful manner.

·         We greatly regret that a few extremists, with funding and direction from abroad, imposed violence in the country, leading to loss of life, damage to public and private property, and harm to the peace of mind of the Venezuelan people.

·         The cyber-attacks on the Venezuelan state mark a new low in imperialism’s hybrid warfare. We denounce the continuation of these attacks, along with attacks on the electricity grid, which are denying the Venezuelan people the right to enjoy a fully functioning economy and government.

·         The 2024 coup attempt against Venezuela bears many similarities to the 2018 US-orchestrated coup attempt against Nicaragua: political targeting of pro-government civilians, attacks on government infrastructure used in poverty reduction programs, destruction of revolutionary monuments by paid violent instigators, and the broader context of economic coercive measures imposed by the United States.

·         These attacks were bolstered by corporate media that, once again, echoed opposition and State Department narratives, grossly distorting reality.

·         We denounce the imposition of additional economic coercive measures by the United States on 15 Venezuelan officials, which is an attempt to further destabilize the Venezuelan economy and government in the months leading up to the January 2025 inauguration.

·         We were not surprised to see the Venezuelan people take to the streets to show the strength of the Bolivarian movement and defend their vote and their democracy. This is very similar to the Nicaraguan people’s response after defeating the violent coup attempt of 2018.

The Nicaragua Solidarity Coalition condemns Washington's unremitting intervention in Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and elsewhere in Latin America as it attempts to reassert US dominance in the region and deny the right of Latin Americans to decide their own destiny. We celebrate the people-centered and people-led Sandinista, Bolivarian, and Cuban revolutions, confident that the people will prevail against imperialism.

¡Viva Sandino!  ¡Viva Chávez!  ¡Viva Fidel!  ¡Patria Libre, o Morir!
